Semar is the most important of the Punakawan (clowns/servants) and is, in fact, a deity Sang Hyang Ismaya who descended to earth in human form. He is the father of the Punakawan. Semar is depicted as stout, with a white face, and serves as the spiritual guide of the knights and heroes. He symbolizes the wisdom of ordinary people and the divine presence in everyday life.
