Bai baby hat with a lion head design, Yunnan (China)

Product Details
Dimensions: W: x D: x H: cm

The Bai, numbering 1.5 million, are one of the largest ethnic minorities in Yunnan Province in southwestern China.

This baby hat, decorated with a lion head, was worn by a girl. According to tradition, young girls wear richly embroidered clothing known as “Goupiyi.” This baby clothing, symbolizing healthy growth, is made by the mother and grandmother. It often includes hats shaped like a phoenix or a lion head.

The lion is a Buddhist symbol. Two lions originally flanked the throne of Buddha, representing the power and volume of his teachings, comparable to a lion’s roar. A Buddhist legend tells of a lion that revived a stillborn cub with its roar. Buddhist lions are often depicted as pairs: the male plays with a ball, while the female protects a cub under her paw.

The lion’s face on the hat features three butterflies. In China, the butterfly is considered a “Cupid,” symbolizing love, marital happiness, joy, and summer. The lion’s ears are embroidered with two plum blossoms. These blossoms, which bloom on bare branches, symbolize feminine purity and immortality. They represent winter as one of the four seasonal flowers and also signify the month of January.

The lion hat’s ears are further adorned with floral patterns, though the specific flowers are unclear. In general, flowers symbolize joy and prosperity. Girls are expected to grow as beautiful as the depicted flowers. Sometimes, they are even named after flowers; for instance, ‘Jinhua’ (golden flower) is a common Bai name.

On the front of the hat, two metal phoenixes are sewn. The phoenix, or Fenghuang, is a mythical creature that once served as the emblem of the empress. The five colors of its tail feathers represent the five virtues: kindness, righteousness, propriety, wisdom, and sincerity. The phoenixes support pom-poms with metal feathers. Below the phoenixes are seven sewn Buddhist figurines and two small cowrie shells.

The ear flaps feature peonies, symbols of love, feminine beauty, honor, and wealth. Like the plum blossoms, the peony is one of the four seasonal flowers and represents spring.

At the back of the hat, two Yin-Yang symbols are depicted. Yin and Yang are opposites yet complementary, as illustrated by the small white circle in the black Yin and the small black circle in the white Yang. Yang symbolizes heaven, sun, light, masculinity, and unity. Yin represents earth, moon, darkness, rest, femininity, and duality. Between the two Yin-Yang symbols, there is another plum blossom.
