Boy's hat, Akha, northern Thailand
Boy's hat, Akha, northern Thailand
Old boys' hat of the Akha, one of the six major hill tribes recognized by the Thai government.
Originally from Yunnan, China, they migrated to northern Thailand in the 19th century. They speak a Tibeto-Burman language and maintain rich oral traditions, with a focus on animism and ancestor worship. Their headgear is highly distinctive, with different hats indicating the age and status of the wearer.
Adorned with embroidery, pompoms, tassels, beads, Burmese coins, and silver ornaments, these headpieces are true works of art. Adolescents wear wide, colorful turbans, while adult married men wear simple black or colored turbans.
